We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We visited during the July school holidays, mainly to be closer to Whakapapa Ski Area. It's about an hour's drive away, and it's a nice one—mostly flat and straight, so the drive goes by quickly.
It was incredibly peaceful and quiet, as winter isn't peak season for Lake Taupō. If you or your family are into skiing or snowboarding, this is a great place to stay during winter.
There's not much to do in Motutere itself, so you'll need to drive about 20–30 minutes into Taupō if you want shops, restaurants, or other activities. We knew this before we came, so we brought everything we needed. The holiday park shop also has the essentials if you happen to forget something.
The holiday park itself is immaculate and huge, with plenty of space to walk around and explore. I also think it has one of the best recreation rooms I've seen at a holiday park, with pool tables, table tennis, and lots of space for the kids to enjoy. They also have a great DVD library available to hire, which was a lovely touch. It was nice introducing our kids to some of the older, family-friendly movies. The owners and managers are lovely too and made us feel very welcome.
As I'm not a skier or snowboarder, I was looking for something active to do, and I found the nearby Waipehi Walk. I originally wanted to leave a separate Google review for it, but it isn't listed, so I'll mention it here.
I initially drove about 2 km from the holiday park and parked opposite the track entrance before crossing SH1 to start the walk. The sign says it's a 3 km return walk and takes about an hour, but it only took me around 35 minutes at a brisk pace. The track is fairly well maintained, although a few sections were narrow and a little slippery because of the winter conditions. It's an easy walk with some lovely views along the way.
When I reached the end, I realised you can actually access the track directly from the holiday park via an entrance near the northern end of the campground. I hadn't noticed it beforehand, otherwise I wouldn't have driven!
Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would definitely come back. If you're visiting in winter for the snow, or you're simply after a peaceful lakeside getaway, I highly recommend staying here. And if, like me, you're not skiing, the Waipehi Walk is a great way to get outside and enjoy the scenery. I've attached a few photos from the walk for anyone interested
