There are so many things to see and do in this gorgeous area however these are our "Top Things to Do in Motutere Bay & Lake Taupo"

At the centre of our region is sparkling Lake Taupō, the great inland sea of New Zealand. As you travel around the lake, you will find every landscape you can imagine. Snow-blanketed winter ski fields and alpine deserts. Ancient forests alive with birdsong. Trout-filled rivers and the thundering Huka Falls. Steaming geothermal valleys with rejuvenating hot springs. Three towering volcanoes in the awesome and otherworldly landscape of Tongariro National Park.

With such an amazing array of activities and sightseeing ventures, we have created a brochure outlining "Must Do Things" in Motutere Bay / Lake Taupo and surrounding area.

From fun-filled, action-packed activities, hidden gems, quiet nature walks off the beaten track to fine dining and relaxation it offers you tips to help make your stay the most enjoyable and memorable experience.

Make a great day of it with excursions into the Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, Pureroa Forest Park as well as being only a 40 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu. 

Several small picturesque settlements are close by. Kuratau, Omori, Pukawa and Whareroa are lakeside settlements a short drive off the Western Bays Highway, while other delightfully situated villages from Motuoapa to Hatepe are passed on State Highway 1 driving north from Turangi to Taupo. 

See New Zealand's largest Totara tree it's a stunning 30 minute walk through native forest off State Highway 30. 

The Waihora lagoon Walk takes just 20 minutes. Surrounded by tall Rimu and Kahikatea trees, the lagoon is one of Pureroa Forest Park's most beautiful spots. 

The Waihaha River is well stocked with Rainbow and Brown trout. Make sure you have a Lake Taupo fishing license. 

The Tauranga Taupo River. Taupo's second largest river is nearby. 

White Water Rafting on Tongariro River. 

The Tihoi Trading Post is a cosy pub and restaurant with a great collection of historic photos of the area.

Abseiling and Rock climbing is great outdoor fun that will give you a real sense of achievement.

Wilderness Horse Trekking - All the pleasure of bush walking but a lot easier on your feet.

Windsurfing - Join the Swans, Ducks and Herons in some low level lake flying.

The Taupo area offers many exciting outdoor adventures. Try gliding, tandem sky diving, rafting, kayaking, sailing, 4-wheel driving (off-road), mountain biking, snow boarding or skiing, abseiling, bungy jumping, a rope assault course, rock climbing, jet boating, parasailing, water skiing, horseback riding, to name a few.

The Lake Taupo region has plenty of choice here! Select from a fantastic range of authentic ethnic fare, pub-style meals or state of the art cordon bleu cuisine.

Cruising / Sailing
Beautiful Lake Taupo with stunning bays and historic places can be explored and enjoyed many different ways. From the Maori rock carvings through to the Western Bays sail or cruise the relaxing way.

Other Leisure Activities: 

Choose from the world-renowned Wairakei International Golf Club, Taupo Golf Club, Centennial or Tauhara Golf courses - all within a 15-minute drive from the township of Taupo. Turangi Golf Club only 15 minutes drive.

Hiking / Walking
There are literally dozens of hikes available including around the lake, along the rivers, native bush and mountain trails. Maps for these hikes are available form the Taupo Information Centre on Tongariro Street. 

One of the finest wine cellars in New Zealand is Taupo's own 'Scenic Cellars'. There is also the Wishart Winery is located in Taupo. 

Alternatively, take a day trip the fantastic wine region of the Hawkes Bay.

Taupo Hot Springs and Spa offers a truly unique experience. Enjoy a massage or facial, or bathe in the natural hot mineral pools. There are also natural pools at Spa Park on the Waikato River.

Drive no more than 40 minutes to enjoy skiing at Whakapapa, New Zealand's largest ski field, abseiling, lake and river fishing, white water rafting, mountaineering, hunting, mountain biking, horse riding, sailing, kayaking, tramping and walking, swimming, caving, playing tennis, golf on the stunning Turangi course or bowls, perhaps a scenic flight. 

At the end of the day you can soothe the soul in natural thermal waters at Tokaanu. The National Trout Centre is also just a short drive away

The town of Taupo is relaxed and friendly, the range of local shops plus the national brand stores mixed with boutique specialty shops makes it an experience in itself./and offering a wide range of restaurants, both outdoor and indoor cafès, art galleries and shops.

The Taupo Motorsport Park is set to become New Zealand's premier Motorsport venue. As an international qualifying race circuit and drag strip it will attract top world Motorsport events which will make Taupo the 'Home of New Zealand Motorsport'. A great venue for conferences, corporate functions, driver training, race experience and a specialist motor industry business centre. 

Geothermal Parks
Taupo is at the centre of New Zealand's volcanic plateau. The area contains numerous parks where you can wander among geysers, mud pools, and colourful pink and white terraces formed by the silica in the thermal water. 'Craters of The Moon' is free to walk through, although a donation will be gratefully accepted.
  • Waitomo Caves, famous for its black water rafting and glow worms.
  • Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Park and home to three volcanoes and many beautiful hikes, including the Tongariro Crossing, one of the most spectacular one-day hikes in New Zealand.
  • The whole family will enjoy the Tongariro National Trout Centre, with a range of activities for children from fishing events to educational displays, it's worth penciling into your stay. www.troutcentre.org.nz
  • Hawkes Bay, famous for its wine as well as the art deco architecture of Napier and several beautiful beaches.
  • Rotorua, New Zealand's version of Yellowstone, with active geysers, mud pools, mineral spas and Maori culture.
  • Whakatane, where you can take a boat out to the active volcano on White Island, charter a fishing boat for the day, or enjoy swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Ohope Beach.

An update to all our loyal guests during these surreal and uncertain times. As we navigate this situation, we continue to keep the safety and wellbeing of our customers and team members at the forefront of our thinking. We want to let you know more about what we are doing in our park in response to COVID-19.

Now that we are at Alert Level 4, we are closed to leisure guests and are only accommodating our permanent residents and some essential travellers for the lockdown period. These travellers are staying under the following conditions:

- Guests are staying in self-contained campervans or caravans, or our self-contained units only
- Communal facilities and shared areas of the park are closed
- A minimum night stay of 28 days applies, to ensure that all guests follow through with the government’s 4-week lockdown requirements, unless proof of an outbound flight can be presented to staff
- Our reception, maintenance and cleaning service will be at reduced capacity and/or operated remotely as circumstances in the park dictate
- We are having to limit, restrict or cease face-to-face interaction, but will do our best to deliver our usual high quality of customer service while adopting safe social distancing practices
